and welcome to the web site of the North and East Hertfordshire Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association. Our aim is to serve all those in the area who are affected by MND and this includes people with MND, their families, carers and friends. We also hope this web site will be useful for healthcare professionals. We are a Branch of the MND Association. The National Office of the MND Association is based in Northampton and in addition there are over 80 local Branches around the country. We are pleased that you have visited our web site and hope that you may wish to get involved with our Branch.

  

WHAT IS MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE ?

The term, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), actually describes a group of related diseases affecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, which tell your muscles what to do. These nerves are known as motor nerves or motor neurones; the words 'nerves' and 'neurones' mean the same thing. As the nerves become damaged, the muscles they control weaken and waste. Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive, life limiting disease but the rate of progression varies greatly from one person to another. The cause of MND is not yet known, but a great deal of research work is currently being carried out. Getting involved in the local Branch is a good way to meet other people in a similar situation and to support the work of the MND Association. New members are always welcome. If you are able to help with any of the Branch activities it will be much appreciated.   YOUR CHANCE TO QUIZ THE EXPERTS

On Saturday 1 November 2008, in conjunction with the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, the MND Association is hosting a two-hour ‘Ask the Experts’ session for people living with MND, their carers, and Branch and Group members.

Your chance

This event is your chance to ask leading international experts in MND any questions that you may have related to current research and the clinical management of MND. The session will include an overview presentation, followed by informal, round-the-table Q&A discussions. It will then finish with a more formal panel Q&A discussion.
